We are happy to come out. But roughly a third of the winter callouts we attend across East Kilbride turn out to be something the householder could have fixed in five minutes, and nobody enjoys paying a callout fee to have a switch flicked.

Here are the five checks worth doing first. All of them are safe to do yourself. If none of them works, send us the details and we will take it from there.

    1. Check the pressure gauge

Look at the gauge on the front of the boiler. It should read between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If it is sitting near zero, the boiler will lock out and refuse to fire.

Re-pressurising is usually a matter of opening the filling loop — a braided silver hose underneath the boiler with a valve at each end — until the needle reaches about 1.2 bar, then closing it firmly. Your manual will show the exact arrangement.

One caveat worth knowing: if you are having to do this every few weeks, you have a leak somewhere, and that does need an engineer. Repeated pressure loss is a symptom, not a fault in itself.

    2. Check the thermostat and the programmer

Obvious, and it catches people more often than you would think. Check the room thermostat is calling for heat and has not been nudged down, and that its batteries are not flat — a thermostat with dead batteries simply stops asking the boiler for anything.

Then check the programmer has not reset itself to factory settings after a power cut. This is extremely common after a winter outage, and it will happily sit there running a schedule you never set.

    3. Check the condensate pipe — especially in a cold snap

This is the classic Scottish winter fault. Condensing boilers produce acidic water that drains away through a plastic pipe, and where that pipe runs outside it can freeze solid in a hard frost. When it does, the boiler detects the blockage and shuts down, usually with a specific fault code.

If you can safely reach the external pipe, pouring warm — not boiling — water over it will often thaw it, after which the boiler will restart. Never use boiling water, and never climb to reach it.

If this happens more than once, the pipe run should be re-routed or insulated. That is worth reporting to us.

    4. Check the fuse and the isolation switch

Check the fused spur near the boiler is switched on, and check the consumer unit for a tripped breaker. Boilers are often on their own circuit and it is easy to miss.

It is also worth checking that nobody has switched off the isolation switch while cleaning or decorating. It happens more often than people admit.

    5. Try one reset — and only one

Most boilers have a reset button that will clear a lockout. Press it once and give the boiler a few minutes to attempt ignition.

If it locks out again, stop. Repeatedly resetting a boiler that keeps failing is not a fix, and on a fault involving ignition or flue gases it is genuinely unsafe. Two lockouts in a row means it needs an engineer.

When to stop immediately and call an East Kilbride engineer

Some things should never be worked around. If you can smell gas, do not touch any switch. Open the windows, turn the gas off at the meter if you can reach it safely, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Likewise, if the boiler is leaking water onto electrics, or if there is any sooting or staining around the case, switch it off and send us the details. Those are not DIY situations, and they are the ones we attend most often across East Kilbride.

For everything else, use the quote form. If you are anywhere in East Kilbride, G74 or G75, we can usually be with you the same morning.

What people say after a repair

    • Heating was going off on its own. Turned out to be the thermostat rather than the boiler, and they said so instead of selling me a new one. Small bill, honest answer.
JT Jacqueline T. East Mains, G74 Boiler repair · November 2025
    • No hot water on a Friday night. Diagnosed it as the diverter valve, had the part on the van, sorted the next morning. Charged exactly what the online quote said.
PH Paul H. Greenhills, G75 Boiler repair · March 2026
    • Our old boiler packed in on the Sunday. I sent photos through the form that night and had a fixed price back before lunch on the Monday. New one installed on the Thursday. Never needed anybody in the house just to get a price, which suited me fine with the wee ones about.
KM Karen M. Calderwood, G74 Boiler replacement · March 2026
    • Boiler locking out over and over. He found a blocked condensate that two other folk had missed. Running fine since.
IM Ian McK. Mossneuk, G75 Boiler repair · December 2025
    • Annual service, in and out in under an hour, and I got the paperwork emailed the same afternoon for the warranty. Straightforward and no trying to sell me anything I did not need.
AR Aileen R. The Murray, G74 Annual service · January 2026
    • Back boiler out, combi in, and we got the airing cupboard back. They told me up front what the flue would need and the price never moved from the quote. Tidy job and they took all the old stuff away.
SD Stuart D. Westwood, G75 Combi conversion · February 2026
